Shimla/New Delhi, May 12, 2025 – One of the greatest cricketers of this generation, Virat Kohli, has officially retired from Test cricket, wrapping up a spectacular career that spanned over 14 years.
Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, leaves the red-ball format with a staggering 9,230 runs from 123 matches, including 30 centuries, 31 fifties, and 7 double centuries—a record that cements his place among the all-time greats.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Kohli said:
> "I’ve given everything I had to Test cricket. It tested me, shaped me, and gave me some of the best moments of my life. I walk away with immense pride and gratitude."
During his captaincy stint, he led India to 40 wins in 68 Tests, making him India’s most successful Test skipper ever. Kohli's leadership helped India dominate world cricket and reach two consecutive World Test Championship finals.
Though the BCCI had reportedly tried to convince him to continue, Kohli stood firm in his decision.
His retirement follows that of fellow teammate Rohit Sharma, marking the end of an era in Indian Test cricket.
While he steps away from Test and T20 formats, Kohli will continue to play ODIs and represent RCB in the IPL.
