Campus Shockers Back-to-Back: Suicide Attempt at Jaypee University Triggers Fresh Storm Over Private Education ‘Promises’

Shimla/Solan/Dehradun: Barely days after a suicide by a former student rocked Shoolini University, another chilling incident has surfaced from Jaypee University of Information Technology, where a student allegedly attempted suicide late last night, triggering unrest on campus and raising uncomfortable questions about the state of private higher education in the hills.

The victim, currently admitted at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, is stated to be in a traumatic condition and “unfit to give a statement,” according to Solan SP Abhishek S.

Police teams from Kandaghat, led by DSP Ashok Chauhan, have been on the campus since last night, interacting with students and the administration. While authorities say the situation remains “peaceful,” the ground reality points to simmering anger among students.

Students across campuses are now openly questioning what they call the “illusion of placements” sold by private universities.

With hefty fees running into lakhs for courses like B.Tech in Computer Science, AI, and Data Analytics, families are investing life savings—only to see many graduates walk out with degrees but no jobs.

“It’s a trap,” said a protesting student, “big promises at admission time, but nothing concrete at the end.”

The anger is not isolated. NGOs and parent groups allege a systemic failure in regulating private institutions, accusing them of aggressive marketing and misleading placement claims.

At the centre of the storm is the non-functional Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission, which has remained headless for nearly three years under the current government. In the absence of a strong watchdog, institutions have virtually been left to operate unchecked.

What makes matters worse is the changing job landscape. With rapid AI integration across industries, entry-level tech jobs are shrinking, layoffs and salary cuts are becoming routine, and the very courses being aggressively sold are losing market relevance.

Yet, private universities continue to mushroom across Himachal, Uttarakhand, and other Himalayan states, banking on the aspirations of middle-class families.

Educationists warn that higher education is fast slipping out of reach for the average household. “This is not just about one or two tragic incidents,” said an academic observer, “it’s about a broken system where education has become a high-risk financial gamble.”

As protests gather momentum and questions grow sharper, the spotlight is now firmly on the government: will it finally activate regulatory mechanisms to rein in private universities, or will students continue to pay the price for a system running on unchecked commercialisation?
