Shimla gets disease early warning system, CM pays tribute to Ambedkar

Shimla, April 14: In a major push to strengthen urban health preparedness, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Metropolitan Surveillance Unit (MSU) at Boileauganj, positioning the hill city among a select group of 20 cities in India with such advanced outbreak monitoring systems.

Set up at a cost of ₹1.56 crore, the MSU will function as an early warning system to detect, prevent and control infectious disease outbreaks in real time.

The Chief Minister said the unit would spring into action during any health emergency, analysing data and alerting hospitals for timely response. Himachal Pradesh, he added, is the first hill state in the country to adopt this technology.

Developed through a tripartite collaboration between the National Health Mission, National Centre for Disease Control and Shimla Municipal Corporation, the MSU will track water, food, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, while coordinating response among civic bodies and health departments. Sukhu also inspected the laboratory and operational facilities of the unit.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to B. R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary at Chaura Maidan and unveiled a monument dedicated to the “Architect of Equality.”

Describing Ambedkar as a visionary reformer and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Sukhu said his lifelong commitment to equality, social justice and empowerment of the marginalized continues to guide the nation. He urged people to draw inspiration from Ambedkar’s ideals to build an inclusive and progressive society.
