MANDI: In a move towards embracing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has restructured its B.Tech. curriculum to prioritize holistic development and stress-free learning to attract the top talent.
Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi, the institute has introduced a flexible curriculum, allowing students to change their branch based on their interests after the first year.
This initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary research and give students the freedom to specialize in their desired fields, Dr Behera said at a press conference here today.
One of the standout features of NEP 2020 incorporated by IIT Mandi is the promotion of cultural heritage.
The newly established Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Applications Centre (IKSMHA) ensures that students get exposed to the rich Indian Knowledge System. The center's 'Introduction to Consciousness and holistic well-being' course has been made compulsory for all B.Tech. students, he said.
Furthermore, IIT Mandi has set up interdisciplinary research centers like the Centre for AI and Robotics (CAIR) and the IKSMHA, which have led to the introduction of three new interdisciplinary programs, including MBA (AI & DS), B.Tech in General Engineering, and B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing.
The institute is also taking significant steps to promote research and innovation among students and faculty members.
State-of-the-art research centers, such as the Advanced Materials Research Centre and the BioX Centre, provide a conducive environment for cutting-edge research, Dr Behera said.
Moreover, IIT Mandi emphasizes teacher training and development, ensuring faculty members are equipped with modern teaching techniques. This, coupled with hands-on learning through socially relevant projects, creates a well-rounded educational experience.
To make quality education accessible to all, the institute leverages technology, offering online learning resources and digital classrooms. Additionally, IIT Mandi has partnered with Wiley and Sons to provide an executive program in AI and data science.
Societal outreach is also a top priority, as IIT Mandi's initiative, Enabling Women of Kamand (EWOK), empowers women in the region through skill development and assistance for employment and entrepreneurship.
With these progressive steps towards NEP 2020 implementation, IIT Mandi is all set to pave the way for a brighter future, aiming to become a Vishva Guru, a global leader in education.
