It was this professionalism, public service and humane concern for people's safety that earned Sonam Lotus, Scientist-F and Head of the Meteorological Centre, Leh, Ladakh, the State Award Ladakh under the Public Service Category.
The award was presented by Vinay Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. It carries a gold medal, citation and a cash prize of ₹51,000.
Sonam's work goes beyond forecasting numbers and reading weather charts. His forecasts routinely help farmers plan their activities, tourists and travel operators assess risks, hoteliers prepare for extreme weather, and government agencies respond to emerging situations.
In the fragile Himalayan environment, where heavy snowfall, cloudbursts, extreme cold, strong winds and sudden weather changes can quickly disrupt life, timely information can save both livelihoods and lives.
For Sonam Lotus, weather forecasting has therefore become a public service with a deeply human purpose: to know the weather before it turns dangerous—and to make sure people know it too.
