Shimla, Feb 24: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday announced that the state government has approved the establishment of a Global Skills and Digital University in Chamba, calling it a major step in the government’s push for “systemic transformation” in education.
The university will come up at Chalera in Sihunta tehsil and focus on skill-based, vocational and industry-oriented education aimed at boosting employability, entrepreneurship and innovation among youth. Sukhu said the initiative aligns with the government’s “Learn and Earn” model.
The institution will offer NSQF-aligned certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through online, blended and experiential learning.
Courses will span healthcare, ICT, engineering and technology, hospitality, textiles, food processing, agriculture, environmental and disaster management, languages, and emerging areas such as AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, fintech, e-commerce and drone applications.
Strong industry linkages, apprenticeships, incubation centres and placement cells will be set up to bridge the gap between education and jobs, the Chief Minister said, adding that the university would play a key role in driving socio-economic development in Himachal Pradesh, especially in rural and remote regions.
