Seven Wonders Proposal Rejected, Shimla Heritage Gets a Breather

Shimla: The proposal to install replicas of the so-called Seven Wonders of the World in Shimla’s Vidhan Heritage Zone has finally been rejected by the State Heritage Committee, bringing relief to citizens and heritage enthusiasts who had opposed the plan.

The proposal, reportedly mooted by the Shimla Municipal Corporation headed, had drawn criticism from former councillors and citizens who questioned what replicas of structures such as the Taj Mahal had to do with Shimla’s distinct heritage character.

The rejection has come as a welcome relief for those concerned about preserving the architectural identity of the Queen of the Hills.

Shimla, the former summer capital of the British Raj for more than a century, is known for its historic Gothic and colonial architecture, not for replicas of monuments from across the world.

Its heritage landscape includes Christ Church and Jakhu Temple overlooking the city, the historic Town Hall, Gaiety Theatre established in 1837, the Viceregal Lodge and other landmark buildings that define Shimla’s unique hill-city character and Heritage.

Installing unrelated replicas in the heritage zone would have been not only aesthetically misplaced but also inconsistent with the architectural and cultural identity of the city.

Former councillor Kimi Sood, who represented the Banmore ward and was among those opposing the proposal, welcomed the decision, saying it was a major relief for Shimla’s heritage character.

The decision also sends a larger message: a historic city does not need borrowed landmarks to enhance its identity.

Shimla’s own heritage is its greatest attraction, and preserving its character should take precedence over ideas that risk turning its historic core into a collection of unrelated replicas.

For a city struggling to protect its heritage from haphazard construction and insensitive interventions, the rejection of the Seven Wonders proposal is indeed a heartening development, said the residents.
