Sukhu Announces State-Level Status for Shahpur Dussehra, Calls for People’s Fight Against Chitta

Shimla, October 19: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday announced state-level status for the Shahpur Dussehra Festival while calling for a united public campaign against chitta, the highly addictive drug threatening the lives and future of young people.

Addressing an Anti-Chitta Walkathon in Shahpur constituency of Kangra district virtually from Shimla, Sukhu said drug abuse was not merely an individual problem but one that affected entire families and society. He urged students, parents, teachers and community organisations to join the government’s efforts to build a drug-free Himachal Pradesh.

The Chief Minister said the government was committed to curbing the illegal trade in chitta, taking strict action against traffickers and dismantling drug networks. He said the campaign also required sustained public awareness to prevent young people from falling prey to substance abuse.

Urging students to spread awareness among their peers, Sukhu encouraged them to participate in sports, education and creative activities. He also appealed to parents and teachers to remain vigilant and pay special attention to children and young people.

Sukhu called on citizens to share information about drug-related activities with the authorities, stressing that public participation was essential to making the anti-drug campaign a mass movement.

The announcement of state-level status for the Shahpur Dussehra Festival is expected to provide a boost to the region’s cultural traditions.

Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, who attended the event at the Dussehra Ground in Shahpur, thanked the Chief Minister for the announcement. He said awareness campaigns were being conducted across the constituency to combat chitta and that the walkathon was part of these efforts.

School students, public representatives and local residents participated in the walkathon to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse.
