Spine Surgery Veteran from Himachal Now Steering AIIMS Rishikesh

New Delhi/Rishikesh: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced the appointment of Dr. Raj Bahadur, one of India’s most respected orthopedic and spine surgeons, as the new President of AIIMS Rishikesh.

Hailing from Una in Himachal Pradesh and now settled in Chandigarh, Dr. Bahadur brings over four decades of surgical and academic excellence to the post.

A former Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, he also headed  the orthopedics department at PGIMER and served as MS at Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, apart from his role at the Regional Spinal Injury Centre, Mohali.

Known for his precision in the operating theatre, Dr. Bahadur has performed over 11,500 spinal surgeries, earning him national recognition.

His work at RSIC Mohali has transformed the lives of countless patients with spinal injuries, while his academic contributions have shaped the careers of hundreds of young doctors.

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda congratulated Dr. Bahadur, calling him “a surgeon par excellence and a mentor who will take AIIMS Rishikesh to new heights of medical service and research.”

The appointment marks a return to a high-profile administrative role for Dr. Bahadur, whose tenure at Baba Farid University ended in 2022 amid a controversy over the Punjab Health Minister’s conduct. Colleagues describe him as a man of principle, who puts patient care above all else.

With Dr. Bahadur at the helm, AIIMS Rishikesh is expected to strengthen its standing as a premier centre for advanced treatment, medical training, and research in North India.
