Uttarkashi: A Battle of Humanity on the Yamuna
On August 26, in Kharaadi village of Uttarkashi, a lone cow marooned on an islet in the swollen Yamuna river had been starving and thirsty for days.
Locals raised an alarm, and soon the fire unit from Barkot swung into action.
The rescue was not simple. Jawans tied ropes across the roaring river, gathered fresh fodder, packed it into bags, and skillfully ferried the feed to the stranded animal.
Their act did not free the cow, but it gave her life-saving relief. In the middle of floods and fear, the gesture stood out as a reminder that humanity is not just about saving humans—it is also about caring for voiceless beings.
Villagers, who had been watching helplessly for days, were moved. “It was heartbreaking to see the cow stuck without food or water. The firemen gave us hope,” said Ramesh pandit, a local.
A fire official added, “Our first duty is to save lives.
Today, it was about saving a life that could not speak but was equally precious.”
