Met the Prime Minister, but the real question remains: Where is the relief for disaster-hit Himachal?
New Delhi/Shimla:
Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha and former CM Jai Ram Thakur today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to apprise him of the widespread devastation caused by recent natural disasters in the state.
During the meeting, the leader explained that people haven’t just lost their homes – they’ve lost their land too in Seraj Nacha, Karsog, Dharampur and other places in Himachal.
Many now have no place left to rebuild. In this context, the Prime Minister was urged to consider relaxing the Forest Conservation Act to allow land allotment for rehabilitation.
Reportedly, the Prime Minister took detailed note of the situation and assured all possible help for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.
A request was also made to carry out a scientific study to understand the root causes behind the state’s frequent natural disasters, so that future damage could be prevented, Thakur said.
But despite the assurances, the burning question remains –“When will promises turn into action?”
Thousands of disaster-affected families are still waiting – for land, for complete relief, and for a concrete rehabilitation plan.
Responding to media questions Thakur said the state government has received relief over Rs 5000 Crore over the years, should answer where and how it was spent. We have sought damaged area specific relief from the Centre he added
While the leader thanked the PM for the central government’s support during rescue and relief operations, the ground reality continues to raise tough questions:
“When will our broken homes get their shelter back?”
Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn out to be yet another courtesy call with no real outcomes, say flood victims
