SHIMLA/PAONTA SAHIB: A disturbing video showing a police constable being allegedly assaulted in Paonta Sahib has triggered widespread outrage across Himachal Pradesh, with citizens and civil society groups condemning the incident as a direct attack on the dignity of the uniform.

The incident reportedly occurred recently when a police constable, on his way to duty, questioned a commuter. Instead of cooperating, the individual allegedly intercepted the policeman, manhandled him and physically assaulted him in full public view.

The video has since gone viral on social media, sparking concern over the growing tendency to challenge and humiliate law enforcement personnel while they perform their duties.

SP Sirmaur said the person has been nabbed and case has been registered against him.

Reacting strongly, Pahari Samaj Paryavaran Kwach (PSPK) termed the incident deeply disturbing and called for strict legal action against those responsible.

"This is not merely an attack on an individual; it is an assault on the dignity, morale and authority of institutions that work tirelessly to maintain law and order and ensure public safety," said Raveena Chauhan, Director, PSPK.

She said a worrying trend was emerging in society where respect for uniformed personnel and public institutions was gradually eroding.

"Whether it is the police, armed forces, disaster response teams or other security agencies, these institutions form the backbone of national stability and security," she added.

Raising a series of uncomfortable questions, PSPK said that even if apologies are offered to the government or police administration, the larger issue remains unresolved.

"Who will apologize to the police officer whose uniform and dignity were insulted while performing his duty? Who will apologize to the families of personnel who risk their lives every day to keep society safe? And who will restore the self-respect and morale of a uniformed officer publicly humiliated in the line of duty?" PSPK  asked.

PSPK CEO Maj Gen Atul Kaushik  noted that Himachal Pradesh has long been known for its culture of peace, discipline and respect for institutions. The organization said the state has produced generations of brave soldiers, dedicated police personnel and responsible citizens, making such incidents particularly alarming.

The organization also highlighted the difficult working conditions faced by police personnel, including long duty hours, mental stress, limited resources and frequent deployment in remote and challenging areas.

During recent Panchayat election duties and other assignments, many personnel worked under demanding circumstances to ensure public safety and the smooth conduct of democratic processes.

"Despite these challenges, they continue to stand guard day and night for the safety of society," he said.

While acknowledging that criticism of institutions is a democratic right, PSPK emphasized that violence, intimidation and public humiliation of uniformed personnel cannot be justified under any circumstances.

"The need of the hour is not fear, but discipline, responsibility and mutual respect. Society must understand that law and order do not function automatically; they are maintained through the sacrifice, dedication and hard work of thousands of uniformed personnel," Maj Gen Kaushik said.

Calling for exemplary punishment to deter similar incidents in the future, PSPK asserted that no individual is above the law and that momentary anger or displays of power can never justify the humiliation of those entrusted with protecting society.

The organization urged citizens to uphold Himachal Pradesh's long-standing values of peace, dignity and respect for institutions, warning that weakening the morale of uniformed services ultimately weakens the foundations of a civilized society.
