SHIMLA: In preparation for the upcoming elections, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Maneesh Garg announced today that 5,711,969 voters are registered to exercise their franchise.
This marks a significant milestone following the finalization of the electoral rolls with the cut-off date of April 1, 2024, completed by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and published on May 14, 2024, as per the Election Commission of India's schedule.
Garg highlighted a notable increase in voter registration, with a net gain of 89,212 voters since the last publication on January 5, 2024, which listed 5,622,757 voters.
The concerted efforts of the Election Department have also resulted in a substantial rise in young voters aged 18-19.
Compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, this age group has grown from 152,390 to 171,675 voters, now constituting 3.10 percent of the total electorate, up from 2.8 percent in 2019.
Overall, the number of registered voters has surged by 381,815 from 5,330,154 in 2019, reflecting a 7.16 percent increase.
Currently, the state boasts 5,645,579 general voters, comprising 2,848,326 males, 2,797,218 females, and 35 transgender individuals, along with 66,390 service voters.
A significant development noted by Garg is the 52.63 percent increase in voters with disabilities (PwD), rising from 37,852 in 2019 to 57,775 in 2024.
The proportion of PwD voters has thus grown from 0.71 percent to 1.01 percent of the electorate.
Additionally, the sex ratio among voters has improved, now at 982 females per 1,000 males, compared to 980 in 2019, surpassing the state’s population sex ratio of 976.
The voter demographics also include 1,254 centenarians and 60,835 individuals over the age of 85.
For public convenience, the updated voter lists are accessible on the Election Department’s website. Voters can verify their registration via the NVSP portal or the Voter Helpline mobile application.
