Shimla July 23: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has criticized the Union Budget 2024-25, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, calling it "anti-poor, anti-farmer, and non-futuristic."
Sukhu expressed disappointment, stating the budget ignored the state's long-standing demands and the aspirations of its people.
"The budget is inequitable," said Sukhu, highlighting key concerns such as unemployment, poverty, and rising prices. While the increase in the allocation for interest-free loans to states to Rs. 1.5 lakh crore is welcome, Sukhu noted the tough conditions attached do not favor smaller states like Himachal Pradesh.
Sukhu criticized the budget for failing to address the state's needs for financial assistance in road, air, and rail connectivity.
He also lamented the lack of a special grant for the hilly state, despite its significant disaster-related losses last year.
"The Himachal government had requested Rs. 9,042 crore in financial assistance post-disaster, but nothing concrete has been announced," he said.
The cessation of GST compensation has put Himachal Pradesh in a precarious financial position, causing an annual loss the state can't afford.
Sukhu called for a special financial package akin to those provided to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, which the budget did not deliver.
Sukhu also pointed out that while the budget borrowed ideas from the Congress manifesto, such as employment-linked incentives and an apprenticeship scheme, it fell short in delivering substantial tax reliefs for the middle class and measures to support the agricultural sector.
Accusing the Modi government of trying to appease its allies and save the Prime Minister's image, Sukhu noted the absence of measures to reduce import duty on apples, which would have benefitted the state's apple growers.
"The budget fails to address critical issues of unemployment, rising prices, and growing inequality," he said.
"It's high time for a budget that reflects the needs and aspirations of all citizens, ensuring equitable growth and prosperity for every section of society."
