NEW DELHI/SHIMLA/DEHRADUN:

India's tourism promotion is set for a major digital makeover.

The Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google India to leverage artificial intelligence, digital technologies and data-driven insights to promote the country's tourism destinations among domestic and international travellers.

The collaboration aims to strengthen India's global tourism footprint. The partnership will focus on digital tourism promotion, knowledge sharing, capacity building and the use of emerging technologies to enhance visitor engagement.

It will harness Google's digital ecosystem to showcase India's cultural heritage, natural landscapes and unique travel experiences under the Incredible India initiative.

Himalayan states are expected to emerge as major beneficiaries. Tourism is the economic lifeline of states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

Enhanced digital visibility can bring global attention to their heritage villages, ancient temples, monasteries, trekking routes, wildlife reserves, high-altitude lakes, adventure tourism and eco-tourism destinations that often remain outside mainstream travel circuits.

The initiative could also help decongest India's overcrowded hill stations. Smarter digital promotion can encourage travellers to explore lesser-known destinations instead of concentrating in crowded tourist hubs such as Shimla, Manali, Dehradun, Leh and Srinagar.

By showcasing hidden valleys, heritage villages, pilgrimage circuits, trekking trails and community-based tourism experiences, the initiative can spread tourist arrivals more evenly across the Himalayas.

This would reduce pressure on fragile mountain ecosystems while creating fresh livelihood opportunities through homestays, local handicrafts, traditional cuisine and eco-tourism in remote mountain communities.

Technology can redefine the visitor experience.

Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said digital technologies have the potential to create immersive experiences that showcase the glory and grandeur of India's cultural and natural heritage to audiences across the world.

He said cutting-edge technologies can transform the way travellers discover, experience and engage with India's diverse tourism offerings.

Artificial intelligence will make tourism promotion smarter. Google India will provide insights into global travel trends, traveller behaviour and digital engagement patterns to help the Ministry design evidence-based promotional campaigns.

These data-driven strategies are expected to improve the reach, effectiveness and global competitiveness of India's tourism marketing.

Capacity building forms another important pillar of the partnership. Google India will train Ministry officials in digital marketing, campaign optimisation, content creation and the use of artificial intelligence.

The objective is to make tourism outreach more targeted, measurable and responsive to changing travel trends.

The partnership comes without any financial commitment. The Ministry said the MoU is non-commercial, non-binding and non-exclusive, with no financial implications for either side.

Both the Ministry of Tourism and Google India reaffirmed their commitment to using innovation and technology to position India as a preferred global travel destination while ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach remote Himalayan communities as well as established destinations.
