Shimla/IMD, March 27: Himachal Pradesh is heading into a spell of unstable weather with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected between March 28 and March 31, prompting authorities to issue an alert for farmers and tourists across hill districts. 

According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, a fresh Western Disturbance will impact northwest India from the night of March 28, triggering isolated to fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity across the state over the next 3–4 days. 

 Weather warning (March 28–31): 

Thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph) likely at isolated places

Active spell expected March 29–30, continuing till March 31

Weather to ease after April 1, followed by a gradual rise in temperatures

The impact is expected across key tourist and farming regions including:

Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Mashobra, Kullu–Manali, Bhuntar, Seobagh, Kangra, Dharamshala, Palampur, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur (Paonta Sahib)

🌾 Advisory for farmers

With apple orchards entering a sensitive phase:

Avoid spraying pesticides or fungicides during March 28–31

Secure anti-hail nets, stakes and young plants

Be cautious of strong winds damaging blossoms

Monitor orchard moisture and fungal risk after rainfall.

🚗 Advisory for tourists:Avoid travel during afternoon thunderstorm hours in high-altitude areas

Be cautious on slippery roads and landslide-prone stretches

Stay away from open ridges, forests and water bodies during lightning

Trekking and adventure activities should be planned post April 1

 Current weather snapshot

The past 24 hours remained largely dry across Himachal, with no significant rainfall recorded. Temperatures stayed near normal, with Keylong at 2.5°C (lowest) and Paonta Sahib touching 31°C (highest). 

A short but sharp spell of pre-monsoon-like activity is set to hit Himachal between March 28 and March 31.

While not extreme, the mix of wind, lightning and sudden showers could disrupt farming operations and tourist movement—calling for caution over the next few days.
