The shutdown was called by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Apex Body, Leh (ABL), following the detention of renowned environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk
Wangchuk, a well-known advocate for Ladakh’s environmental and cultural rights, was detained last night at the Singhu border in Delhi. He was reportedly en route to hold a peaceful march towards Gandhi Samadhi.
The activist’s arrest has sparked outrage across the region, leading to the bandh, which saw markets, businesses, and public life come to a standstill in solidarity with Wangchuk’s cause.
Local leaders of KDA and ABL strongly condemned the detention, calling it a blow to peaceful activism. Protests are expected to continue until the demands for Wangchuk's release are addressed.
Despite the bandh, no major incidents of violence were reported, with demonstrators maintaining peace across Leh and Kargil.
They later shouted slogans against Delhi Police as they hold a protest march in the town.
However, the growing unrest reflects the region's mounting frustration over environmental concerns and their political rights.
