Her World Burned, Yet She Gave Light, Mamta Dies at PGI.
Mandi: In a tragic end to a horrifying incident, Mamta, the Mandi woman who was attacked with acid by her husband last week, died late Wednesday night at PGI Chandigarh.
She had suffered severe burns on nearly half of her body and could not recover despite four days of intensive treatment.
What stands out is her final act of humanity. Before losing consciousness, Mamta told her family she wanted to donate her eyes, so someone else could see the world she would never see again. Her wish has been fulfilled.
According to police, Mamta’s husband Nand Lal allegedly threw acid on her during a domestic dispute in their Sain Mohalla home and then pushed her from an upper floor.
Neighbours rushed her to hospital. She was first treated in Mandi, then shifted to AIIMS Bilaspur, and finally to PGI as her condition worsened.
Doctors said her injuries were too deep and widespread. She passed away around 11:45 pm.
Police had earlier filed a case of attempt to murder. With Mamta’s death, the case is now being converted to murder. An FSL team has inspected the house, and the accused remains in custody.
A Reminder for Society
Mamta had spoken about her troubles in multiple social media posts before the attack.
Her death again raises serious questions about the rise of domestic violence and the easy availability of acid.
Even in her final moments, Mamta chose to help someone else — an act that will remain her lasting legacy.
