The number of migratory birds has soared to 92,885, up from 85,000 recorded during the same period last year. Bird watchers are confident the count will touch one lakh before the season wraps up.
Around 100 species of migratory birds visit Pong Dam annually. This year, 85 species have already been observed.
Critics who once called the reservoir an ecological disaster now seem to have gone silent. Instead, Pong Dam has transformed into a man-made haven for the winged visitors.
The key to this success? The site’s protected status as a wildlife sanctuary and Ramsar site, managed by the Himachal Pradesh forest department and keenly protected by local residents.
Sukhu Promotes Pong’s Tourism Potential
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited Pong Dam in Kangra today. He enjoyed birdwatching and toured the ancient Bathu-Ki-Lari temples nearby. The CM highlighted the region’s immense tourism potential.
“Migratory birds from Siberia and Mongolia flock to Pong Dam every winter, drawing tourists from across India.
He directed the forest department to ensure the birds’ safety.
Boosting Tourism: Boats, Facilities, and Water Sports
Two boats are already operational for visitors, and two speed boats will soon be added. Basic tourist facilities are also being developed. Sukhu revealed that 30,000 tourists visited the area last year.
To attract more visitors, the government is planning water sports activities at the Regional Water Center near Pong Dam Barrage.
Wildlife Interpretation Centre: A Learning Hub
In the Basa area of Jawali constituency, a Wildlife Interpretation Centre has been set up at a cost of ₹3.20 crore. The centre offers stay facilities, including dormitories, for students.
“This is a great opportunity for students to connect with nature,” Sukhu said. The centre aims to educate young minds about biodiversity and conservation while highlighting the remarkable migratory patterns of these birds.
The CM invited bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, and students to experience Pong’s breathtaking avian diversity.

Agriculture Minister Prof. Chander Kumar, Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma, DC Hemraj Bairwa, SPs of Nurpur and Dehra, and other officials accompanied the CM during the visit.
