SHIMLA: The historic Ridge wore a solemn yet proud look on Monday as people from across Himachal Pradesh gathered to pay tribute to six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on his birth anniversary, remembering the leader many regard as the architect of modern Himachal.

Towering over The Ridge, the bronze statue of Virbhadra Singh became the focal point of remembrance as political leaders, party workers and ordinary citizens offered floral tributes to a man whose political journey ran parallel to the growth story of the hill state for more than five decades.

Leading the homage, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said Virbhadra Singh's contribution to the development of Himachal Pradesh remains unmatched.

He described him as a towering Congress leader who served the state six times as Chief Minister and ensured that the fruits of development reached even the remotest mountain villages.

More than a politician, Virbhadra Singh was a phenomenon in Himachal's public life. From snow-bound tribal valleys to apple-growing mountain hamlets, his influence transcended political boundaries.

Generations of Himachalis saw in him a leader who could navigate the corridors of power in New Delhi while remaining firmly rooted in the aspirations of ordinary people back home.

Etched across the state's landscape, his legacy lives on through roads carved into mountainsides, schools and colleges opened in remote regions, healthcare facilities expanded to underserved areas and infrastructure projects that helped connect isolated communities to the mainstream of development.

For many, modern Himachal bears the unmistakable imprint of his vision.

Reflecting the respect he continues to command, Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Kuldeep Singh Pathania, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, HPCC President Vinay Kumar, MLAs Harish Janartha and Chander Shekhar, along with senior leaders, councillors and citizens, joined the tribute ceremony. Virbhadra Singh's wife and former MP Pratibha Singh along with her daughter in-law was also present  on the occasion.

Surviving beyond electoral victories and political battles, Virbhadra Singh's enduring appeal lies in the personal bond he forged with people across the state.

His ability to listen, his accessibility and his understanding of hill issues earned him a place in the hearts of countless Himachalis.

The  flowers piled up at his statue overlooking the Maidan and the Ridge.  Thr leaders come and go, but a few leave behind a legacy that becomes part of a state's identity.

For many in Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh remains that leader — the man who shaped an era and helped build the Himachal we know today.
