Eye check-ups camp in Shimla

Shimla, 23 August 2024: Seven out of 105 bus drivers in Shimla have been flagged for urgent eye treatment after a one-day eye camp at ISBT Shimla revealed serious vision issues.

The camp, organized by the Himachal Pradesh Police's Traffic, Tourist, and Railway (TTR) division under the direction of DGP Dr. Atul Verma, IPS, was aimed at ensuring the health and safety of drivers on the treacherous hill roads.

A specialized medical team from Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, including eye medical officers, optometrists, and technicians, conducted comprehensive eye exams on 105 drivers of heavy and light commercial vehicles.

Out of these, 7 drivers were advised to seek immediate treatment at an eye hospital to prevent potential accidents. Fortunately, no cases of color blindness or other disqualifying conditions were found.

In addition to eye exams, 91 drivers were screened for HIV, HCV, Syphilis, and HBsAg, with all results returning negative.

Additional SP Narvir Singh Rathour, who coordinated the camp, emphasized the critical role of such initiatives in keeping drivers healthy and preventing road accidents.

Local truck, tempo, and taxi unions praised the police for their focus on driver well-being.

DIG TTR Gurdev Chand Sharma, IPS, who visited the camp, highlighted the importance of regular eye check-ups for safe driving.

He stressed that early detection of eye problems is crucial to preventing accidents, especially on the winding roads of Himachal Pradesh.

These camps, part of the state's broader road safety efforts, not only help in detecting issues early but also raise awareness among drivers about the need for regular health check-ups.

The Himachal Pradesh Police remains committed to proactive measures that ensure safer roads and healthier drivers, reducing the risk of road accidents and fatalities.
