Later in night, parts of Shimla also witness snowfall and could be a light one in the next two three hours.
The snowfall if continues tonight would brought a wave of cheer among local residents, tourists, and especially apple farmers, who had been grappling with a prolonged dry spell of over two and a half years.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Shimla, this snowfall marks a significant shift in weather patterns after an unusually warm and dry period.
IMD officials stated that the region recorded a drop in temperatures, with Shimla touching a low of -1°C, while higher altitudes like Narkanda and Kufri experienced sub-zero conditions.
"This snowfall is critical for replenishing soil moisture essential for apple orchards. It also ensures adequate chilling hours, which are vital for a good apple harvest next season," said a senior fruit scientist.
The snowfall has also brought relief to snow sports enthusiasts, with resorts in Narkanda, Solang Nala, and Manali now wearing a thick white blanket.
Tourists from across the country are flocking to these areas, with hoteliers reporting a surge in bookings.
“The winter sports season has officially begun, and we’re optimistic about a great turnout,” said a resort owner in Solang Nala.
Additionally, the snowfall has provided a much-needed reprieve from the persistent smog and the lurking threat of forest fires.
Over the past months, Himachal Pradesh had been on high alert due to an unusual spike in forest fire incidents, exacerbated by the dry conditions.
“The snowfall has significantly reduced the risk of forest fires and improved air quality across the region,” said an IMD spokesperson.
As locals and tourists celebrate the return of Shimla's winter wonderland, experts from IMD have advised travelers to stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions, as snowfall could lead to disruptions in connectivity in the coming days.
