In a tragic incident, six people were burnt alive after a massive fire broke out in Talagana village of Ghanduri panchayat under Nohra Dhar in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district late Wednesday night.
According to officials, the victims included two women, three children and a man who had come to the village to celebrate the Maghi festival.
One person, identified as Lokender Singh, was rescued in an injured condition and is currently undergoing treatment at CHC Nohra Dhar.
The victims had gathered at their maternal home to celebrate the festival. According to police, the family had finished dinner and gone to sleep when thick smoke suddenly filled the room around 3 am, followed by a loud explosion from the kitchen.
Survivor Lokender Singh, who sustained serious burn injuries, told investigators that there was no time to escape after the blast.
His wife, two young daughters, three-year-old son, sister-in-law and brother-in-law were trapped inside the burning house.
Lokender hails from Bijjar village in Dewat panchayat in Chopal subdivision and had gone to his inlaws there.
Villagers rushed to help after hearing desperate screams, but the fire spread rapidly, turning the house into a raging inferno within minutes. By the time fire tenders arrived, everything had been reduced to ashes.
The tragedy has plunged the entire village into mourning.
SDM Sangrah Sunil Kaith told media that preliminary investigation points towards an LPG cylinder blast as the cause of the fire. The explosion reportedly occurred around 3 am when the family members were asleep.
Police said four houses were completely gutted in the blaze. Two cows and a calf also perished after the fire spread to a nearby cattle shed.
Fire brigade and police teams rushed to the spot after receiving information, but by then the flames had already destroyed the structure.
The district administration has initiated relief measures and further investigation is underway.
