Shimla, 22 August 2024: The freshers at Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, got a reality check on what life is like for persons with disabilities.
The Centre for Studies Related to Persons with Disabilities (C.S.D.), under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Chanchal Kr. Singh, the acting Vice Chancellor, organized a sensitization event that went beyond the usual lectures.
Dr. Sachin Sharma, Director of C.S.D., kicked off the event by emphasizing why students need to understand the struggles that disabled individuals face daily.
Students were asked to write with their non-dominant hand, making them realize how simple tasks can become challenging.
A documentary was also screened, showing the harsh realities of inaccessible tourist spots across India, making everyone think twice about what it truly means to be inclusive.
This initiative is part of HPNLU’s ongoing efforts to create a more empathetic and aware generation of lawyers who will advocate for better accessibility and inclusion in all spheres of life.
What’s Next?
Taking inspiration from countries like the UK, which has made most of its tourist destinations wheelchair accessible, HPNLU aims to push for similar changes in India.
Countries like the United States, Australia, and Japan are leading the way in providing top-notch facilities for the disabled, from accessible public transport to specially designed tourist attractions.
For students, the takeaway was clear: It's not just about knowing the law; it's about understanding the people it serves. And the future lawyers of HPNLU are already on the right path.
