PM Modi Announces ₹1,600 Crore Flood Relief Package for Punjab, CM Unwell and Misses Meeting
Chandigarh, September 9 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a special relief package of ₹1,600 crore for flood-hit Punjab after conducting an aerial survey and meeting affected families in Gurdaspur.
The state has been reeling under its worst floods since 1988, with over 1,400 villages inundated, 3.7 lakh acres of farmland submerged, and the death toll climbing past 50.
Modi said the Centre stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Punjab and assured immediate relief to those who lost their loved ones or homes.
Families of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh each, while seriously injured persons will get ₹50,000. Farmers and orphans have been promised special assistance under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and PM CARES for Children, while damaged schools will be rebuilt under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
The Prime Minister interacted with flood victims and reviewed ongoing relief operations with top officials, NDRF and SDRF teams.
He stressed that the Centre would work in tandem with the state to ensure swift rehabilitation, from repairing homes under PM Awas Yojana to restoring schools, roads and veterinary services.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, who has been unwell, could not join the Prime Minister during his visit.
However, officials said the state government has already announced its own relief plan for farmers and families of victims.
With over 3.7 lakh acres of farmland lost and thousands displaced, Punjab faces a long road to recovery. Modi’s visit and package are being seen as a critical step towards rebuilding the battered state.
