Pune Tourist Dies Near Chandratal Lake, Suspected of High Altitude Sickness
Manali, August 4:
A tourist from Pune lost his life after showing suspected symptoms of high altitude sickness during a trip to the picturesque Chandratal Lake in Himachal’s Lahaul region.
The tourist, identified as Akash Thadve, 24, Bhor, Pune, Maharashtra had travelled to Chandratal with a group and was staying at a camp near the lake.
Everything seemed fine until he suddenly started feeling unwell — complaining of severe congestion and chest discomfort, which is often linked to altitude-related complications.
Realising the seriousness of his condition, the group immediately rushed him down from the lake towards Koksar.
But with road blocked due to recent weather disturbances, the army came to the rescue and escorted him in a military vehicle.
He was given primary treatment at Koksar, but before he could reach a proper medical facility in Manali, his condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors at the Manali hospital declared him brought dead.
Local police in Manali confirmed the incident and said preliminary findings suggest high altitude sickness, though a postmortem will establish the exact cause.
This tragic death has once again brought focus on the increasing number of high-altitude sickness cases among tourists flocking to Lahaul-Spiti and other high-altitude spots in Himachal.
Health experts have often warned that many tourists — unaware or unprepared — ignore symptoms like breathlessness, fatigue, and chest pain, which can quickly turn fatal without timely intervention and acclimatisation.
