Shimla, May 1 — Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan has been appointed as a member of the Institute Body of AIIMS Bilaspur.
The appointment was made official through a notification issued by Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry headed by Jagat Prakash Nadda, who hails from Bilaspur.
Mahajan was earlier a senior leader in the Congress party. He switched to the BJP just before the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. His move was seen as a major blow to the Congress in the state.
In February last year, Mahajan pulled off a major upset. He defeated senior Congress leader and legal heavyweight Abhishek Manu Singhvi in the Rajya Sabha elections.
Both candidates had received equal votes. The result was decided by a draw of lots. Mahajan won the toss and secured the Rajya Sabha seat.
However, Singhvi later challenged the result. The case is currently pending in the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Mahajan’s appointment to the AIIMS Bilaspur body is being viewed as a strategic move.
The BJP is aiming to strengthen its presence in institutions in Himachal Pradesh. AIIMS Bilaspur is one of the most important health infrastructure projects in the state and is the baby of JP Nadda.
Political observers believe this is part of JP Nadda’s plan. The BJP is preparing the ground for the next big political battle in the hill state.
