MANALI: THE surging Beas roared its way down Manali, turning the hill town into a ghost city without tourists, as road links to Lahaul-Spiti snapped once again.
Highways Washed Away
The Old Manali bridge was swept off by the floodwaters while a 200-metre stretch of the Manali–Atal Rohtang Tunnel highway, 5 km uphill, was washed away. This has cut off the entire Lahaul-Spiti district from Himachal Pradesh.
Stranded in Lahaul
Nearly a hundred tourists remain stranded in Lahaul, Sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Jispa, Darcha on Serchu on the Leh highway and Udaipur on the Kishtwar route, forced to take shelter in dhabas and community spaces and homestays.
Flood Havoc in Manali
The toll tax barrier at Patlikuhal and the subji mandi were inundated as the Beas swelled beyond its 2023 levels. Several dhabas, roadside sheds and shops have been washed away.
In Old Manali, Palchan, Burua, Shanag and uphill villages, houses and sheds were flooded as the Beas and Manalsu khad spilled over.
Town Marooned Again
“No bijli, no pani, no connectivity—Manali is marooned just like in 2023,” residents said, pointing out that all the restoration work carried out by PWD, NHAI and BRO after last year’s disaster has been wiped out again.
Deserted Hotels, Tourist Warnings
Hotels across Manali wore a deserted look with mass cancellations.
Locals have advised tourists to stay away this season, warning that the scale of damage could rival that of 2023.
As the Beas thundered past Solang, Manali, Kullu and Mandi, washing away highways, bridges and markers, Himachal remains on edge with rains showing no sign of slowing.
