August Monsoon Breaks Records in Himachal Pradesh: Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc
Shimla: The August 2025 monsoon shattered records in Himachal Pradesh, dumping 431.3 mm rainfall—the 9th highest since 1901 and the heaviest August rainfall since 1949.
Vigorous rains on 25th-26th August wreaked havoc across the state, while scattered heavy showers on 2nd, 5th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 13th, 20th, and 22nd August added to the deluge.
District-wise Extremes
Kangra: 816.2 mm, moderate departure 29%
Una: Extremely heavy 222.8 mm on 2nd August; multiple very heavy showers
Kullu: Highest positive departure 165%—far above normal
Bilaspur, Chamba, Kinnaur, Mandi, Shimla, Solan & Una: Large excess rainfall
Hamirpur, Kangra & Sirmaur: Excess rainfall
Lahaul-Spiti: Driest with 129.7 mm, near normal

Kahu (Bilaspur) – 190.5 mm (25th Aug)
Nagrota Surian (Kangra) – 180.2 mm (12th Aug)
Naina Devi (Bilaspur) – 160.8 mm (26th Aug)
Mandi – 151.2 mm (5th Aug)
Amb (Una) – 150 mm (20th Aug)
Large excess rainfall (68% above normal) triggered landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging in many districts.
Shimla, Kullu and Mandi saw significant impact on horticulture and apple orchards, while Lahaul-Spiti remained mostly unaffected.
