Shimla: In a move aimed at bringing greater order and transparency to the city’s transport system, the Himachal Pradesh Police on Tuesday launched a Pre-Paid Taxi Service in Shimla.
The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who said the service would provide tourists and local commuters with safe, reliable and transparent transport.
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, attracts lakhs of tourists every year. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that ensuring a fair and hassle-free travel experience for visitors and residents is among the government’s priorities.
Under the new system, passengers will be able to hire taxis at fixed and pre-determined fares, which is expected to reduce disputes, prevent overcharging and bring greater transparency to the city’s taxi operations.
The service will be coordinated by the Himachal Pradesh Police, which will act as a facilitator between passengers and the Jai Mata Tara Friends Taxi/Maxi Operators Union to ensure the service runs in an organized manner.
Senior officials including Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari, Shimla MLA Harish Janartha, and Mayor Surinder Chauhan were present at the launch.
The initiative marks the first time that the police department has taken the lead in facilitating a pre-paid taxi system in the hill town.
Traditionally, transport-related initiatives have been associated with the Himachal Road Transport Corporation, which functions under Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri.
Roping in police and private taxis unions reflect a trust deficit on HRTC.
Observers say the police involvement reflects the government’s effort to ensure better regulation and passenger confidence in the taxi system, particularly in a busy tourist destination like Shimla.
At the same time, some transport stakeholders believe the move will require close coordination with the transport department and taxi unions to ensure smooth implementation.
Another aspect that will need clarity is the detailed fare structure, which has not yet been publicly released.
If implemented effectively, the pre-paid system could bring greater transparency and discipline to the city’s taxi operations.
For now, the initiative is being seen as a step towards improving tourist-friendly transport services in Shimla, even as residents and stakeholders watch closely to see how it performs on the ground.
