BREAKING: “Lindur is Vanishing”— Lahaul-Spiti residents Raise Red Flag Over Mega Projects in Fragile Valley

KEYLONG: The ancient village of Lindur in Lahaul-Spiti is staring at a ticking time bomb, with 30 mega hydroelectric projects, two four-lane highways, and a railway line threatening to shatter the ecological balance of this fragile Western Himalayan district.

In a hard-hitting message on social media, local Bard and writer Ajey hot on the heesl of the Save Lahaul-Spiti Society stand on the issue of sinking village, has warned, “Our land is on the edge of collapse. We are already at the last saturation point. One more blow—and it might just be the end.”

Geologists and local activists are sounding alarm bells. “The ground is cracking with minor tremors, and even small changes in water patterns are washing away the soil. Imagine what thousands of tonnes of concrete, machines, and tunnel blasts will do,” a local conservationist said.

The residentshave called for an immediate halt to all so-called ‘developmental’ activities—including four-lane roads, tunnels, and hydro projects—terming them “unscientific, environment-wasteful, and class-special-interest driven.”

“Even traditional activities like agriculture and irrigation need to be re-evaluated here. That’s how fragile this terrain is,” said Ajey  who is also the member of the society.

“We urge the government to stop pouring its economic muscle into these reckless ventures and instead invest in genuinely sustainable, climate-resilient models of growth.”

The group isn’t just holding the government accountable—it’s waking up the public too:

“People need to recognize these ecological signals and stop cheering concrete in the name of progress, residents asserted.

Development isn’t just about buildings and dams. It’s also about protecting what we already have—our soil, water, culture, and communities.”

As mega projects inch closer to execution, the voice from Lindur is turning into a roar—a final plea from the mountains before silence falls.

Will anyone in power listen?
