Vijaypal Singh, Seraj

Mandi, July 12, 2025
In the wake of large-scale devastation caused by floods and landslides in Seraj valley, Congress leader Vijaypal Singh, chairperson of Congress Vichar Vibhag  has urged the public at large  to donate only through verified and official channels to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.

He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in all financial aid, warning against unofficial or unregulated collection drives.

Speaking to the media here today, Singh appreciated the unified response by political parties and appealed to MPs, the Chief Minister, and the Leader of Opposition to come together to demand a liberal relief package from the Centre.

“The challenge isn’t just rescue, it’s rehabilitation. Entire villages are gone, and most available land falls under forest category. Where will we resettle our people?” he questioned.

He highlighted critical infrastructure losses in villages, roads, and water channels, and pushed for a scientific study of recurring erosion and landslides in the region rather than labeling everything as a simple "cloudburst."

He also called on BBMB to take stock of siltation issues in Seraj’s basin catchments, stressing the need for urgent reshaping and maintenance of key water bodies.

“Disaster has hit us year after year. Now is the time to understand the geology, the water flows, the temperature shifts — all of it scientifically,” Singh said, urging environmental and geotechnical experts to document Seraj as a case study.

In an appeal, Singh asked all panchayat representatives to rise above politics in this time of crisis. “The public isn’t watching your party. They’re watching your action. Show your humanity,” he added.

Singh also suggested long-term planning:

  • Declaring Seraj a 'Tirth Yatra Disaster Zone' to fast-track development and relief.

  • Involving corporates through CSR for rebuilding, especially in adopting entire villages.

  • Providing proper sheds, schools, and health facilities in affected areas.

  • Using technology like CCTV and inventory systems to monitor camps and supply distribution.

Appreciating Chief Minister Sukhu’s ground presence, Singh praised the CM’s gesture of sharing accommodation with affected people and ending VIP culture.

“Our CM didn’t just do an aerial survey — he stayed with the people. That’s real leadership,” he said.

Singh also highlighted that while Gujarat flood victims recently received ₹4,000–₹8,000 as central aid, Himachal Pradesh is yet to get any substantial support from the Centre.

He appealed to PM Modi and ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur, saying, “If not now, then when?”

He concluded with a call for scientific, sensitive, and united action — not only to rebuild Seraj but to prepare for future climate shocks.

“This is not the time for blame games. It’s time to act, to rebuild Seraj stronger, safer, and smarter,” Singh said.
