Six Days on, National Highway from Manali Still Breached...
KELANG, AUGUST 31: Farmers in Lahaul-Spiti are staring at rotting vegetables in their fields as road links to markets remain snapped for over a week.
With the Keylong–Manali and Manali–Kullu highways still breached, and the Samdho–Rampur stretch blocked at Neugalseri and Chaura despite restoration efforts by the BRO, cash crops are piling up with no way out.
Worried farmers have now demanded that the government press cargo flights into service to lift their perishable vegetables and fruit to outside markets before they decay completely.
Adding to their woes, trucks trying to move the produce through the Kinnaur side are taking three days to reach markets, by which time vegetables risk rotting on the way.
Deputy Commissioner Lahaul-Spiti and President of the District Disaster Management Authority, Kiran Bhadana, said the administration is committed to finding quick solutions.
She urged farmers to immediately report any transport difficulties with their cash crops and vegetables to the District Emergency Management Centre. Farmers can call 9459461355 or 1077 for assistance, she said.
“The effort is to ensure that farmers don’t face transportation issues and their crops reach markets on time, so they get fair value for their hard work,” Bhadana assured.
But for the growers, time is running out as vegetables rot in the fields while they wait for roads—or flights—to rescue their produce.
