Lahaul-Spiti Welcomes Historic All-Women Leadership. Will it deliver?
KEYLONG— In a first for the high-altitude tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, women have taken charge across key leadership roles, ushering in a wave of optimism among residents.
Congress MLA Anuradha Rana, Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, along with the district's Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz, Zila Parishad president Bina Devi, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Aakangsha — all women — are now at the forefront of governance in this rugged Himalayan region.
New DC has not updated the official website of Lahaul-Spiti and DC as per it continues to be Rahul Kumar, who has been transferred to other district. Is Kiran Badana not digital savvy?
Anuradha Rana, 31, recently made history by becoming the district’s first tribal woman MLA, and only the second woman ever to represent Lahaul-Spiti in the state assembly, after Lata Thakur in 1972.
Winning the 2024 bypolls by defeating former minister Ram Lal Markanda, Rana now carries the hopes of a district that battles harsh winters and challenging terrains.
Speaking after her victory, Anuradha Rana said, “This trust placed by the people fills us with new energy and a deep sense of responsibility. We are determined to work tirelessly for the betterment of Lahaul-Spiti.”
Residents, facing months of isolation during the snowbound winters, are looking forward to fresh initiatives under this all-women team. Key focus areas include strengthening road connectivity, upgrading healthcare services, improving drinking water facilities, promoting eco-friendly tourism, and raising education standards across the valley.
Adding to this wave of empowerment, the state government has also rolled out a ₹1,500 monthly stipend for every woman over 18 years old in Lahaul-Spiti, a move aimed at boosting financial independence in the region.
Locals believe that this historic leadership change will bring more compassionate governance and better preparedness for the biting winters and short, bustling summers ahead.
