Shimla, June 5:
Marking World Environment Day, APG Shimla University took a green step forward as NSS volunteers, faculty members, and students launched a plantation drive on the university campus.
The event saw active participation from Registrar Prof. Dr. R.L. Sharma, NSS Program Officer Dr. Pyar Singh, Media Coordinator Dr. Vijay Shree, and Dean of Student Welfare Dr. Neelam Sharma.
With the message “A clean environment is life itself.
Where there is environment, there is water; where there is environment, there is us,” the university pledged to take its green mission beyond the campus.
All NSS volunteers, faculty, and students will carry out a week-long plantation drive in their respective hometowns.
Dr. R.L. Sharma planted a Chinar tree near the Journalism Department and urged students to become active participants in tackling the global environmental crisis.
“Water scarcity, falling groundwater levels, and rising health disorders need urgent public attention. Government efforts alone won’t work—people must join hands,” he said.
NSS Program Officer Dr. Pyar Singh stressed that harming the environment is akin to endangering human life.
“Preserving forests and nature ensures the survival of water, wildlife, and mankind,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Neelam Sharma underlined the deep-rooted connection between Indian culture and nature. “Harmony with the environment is key to a safe and fulfilling life,” she said.
Dr. Vijay Shree appreciated the Journalism students and NSS volunteers for producing environmental awareness videos. “Their creativity is inspiring change and building a culture of environmental consciousness,” she added.
The university’s initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility and action among youth to safeguard the environment for future generations.
