Lions Club Shimla Serves Meals to Over 1,200 at IGMC Under ‘Food for Hunger’ Drive

SHIMLA: In a major humanitarian outreach, members of the Lions Club Shimla served fresh breakfast and lunch to more than 1,200 patients and their attendants at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) on Friday.

The initiative was organized under the club’s flagship “Food for Hunger” service project, aimed at easing the daily burdens faced by families navigating medical treatment far from home.

Project Chairperson Lion Prof. P. S. Panwar coordinated the distribution drive across hospital premises. Volunteers and senior members personally handed out meals to people waiting in OPD queues and wards, offering immediate relief to attendants who often spend long hours at the premier healthcare facility with limited access to affordable, wholesome food.

Highlighting the project’s significance, Area Leader Lion Manmohan Verma noted that addressing food insecurity among vulnerable sections remains central to the organization's mission. "Ensuring that underprivileged individuals and families in distress have access to dignified meals is a core priority for us," Verma said, reaffirming the club’s resolve to sustain similar outreach drives throughout the region.

Club Secretary Lion Dr. Daleep Sharma emphasized that the initiative goes beyond material assistance. "Helping those in difficult circumstances is fundamental to our service philosophy," Dr. Sharma said. "Serving food to patients and their caregivers is not merely a charitable activity—it is a tangible expression of care, empathy, and solidarity with people during their most vulnerable moments."

Senior members, including Lion Prof. K. D. Chandel, actively participated in the distribution alongside volunteers.

Patients and family members visiting IGMC from remote parts of Himachal Pradesh expressed gratitude for the timely support, noting that the gesture spared them both expense and logistical strain during hospital visits.

Following the successful drive, Lions Club Shimla reiterated its pledge to expand community-focused welfare activities across the state capital in the coming months.
