CHANDIGARH: A major nightlong crackdown by Chandigarh Police has reportedly pre-empted a planned terror attack in the city, with three suspected operatives allegedly linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) arrested and a substantial cache of explosives, firearms and an alleged remotely operated IED system recovered.
Police said the arrests followed specific intelligence regarding the movement of suspected BKI operatives in Chandigarh. The accused have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, 19, Jashanpreet Singh alias Jashandeep, 21, and Prabhpreet Singh alias Prabh, 19.
The recovery includes approximately 5 kg of gelatin stick explosives, a detonator, power source and remotely operated system, one pistol, one magazine and five live cartridges, according to Chandigarh Police.
Police suspect an IED attack was being planned. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were allegedly acting on the directions of Satnam alias Satta Naushera, described by police as a foreign-based BKI handler. The suspects allegedly planned to plant an improvised explosive device in Chandigarh with the intention of creating terror.
The operation has raised concerns over attempts by foreign-based terror handlers to establish operational networks through young local recruits. The recovery of explosives along with a remotely operated system and firearm has added to the seriousness of the suspected plot.
The wider network is now under investigation. Chandigarh Police said efforts are underway to establish the source of the explosive material, identify other associates and determine the full extent of the alleged terror network.
The arrests have also highlighted the role of intelligence-led policing in disrupting terror plots before they can translate into attacks on civilians and public places.
Further investigation is underway.
