Monsoon Grips All of Himachal, IMD Warns of Heavy Rain; Tourists and Farmers Cautioned
Shimla, June 24, 2025
The monsoon has now covered every nook of Himachal Pradesh, as per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla.
A fresh spell of widespread rainfall drenched Shimla and other districts on Tuesday, prompting the IMD and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) to issue an orange alert for June 24 and 25.
According to Bulletin No. 176 issued at 1 PM by the IMD Shimla Centre, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue across most parts of the state till June 30, with very heavy rain likely at isolated places on June 25.
The low and mid-hill districts — including Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Sirmaur, Kangra, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Chamba, and Una — are particularly under the scanner for potential flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
In the past 24 hours, Nadaun received 63.5 mm, Hamirpur 61 mm, Kangra 55.5 mm, and Paonta Sahib 49 mm of rainfall.
The lowest temperature was recorded at Kukumseri (13.2°C), which also reported gusty winds up to 46 km/h, raising the risk of tree falls and disrupted movement.
Traffic Snarls and Tourist Overload
Over 50,000 vehicles entered Shimla during the weekend, choking roads and creating gridlocks at key junctions.
The rain has compounded the situation, with slippery roads, poor visibility, and blocked routes posing serious threats to travelers.
HPSDMA’s Advisory for Tourists
Avoid travel to landslide-prone or steep valley zones, especially during or after heavy spells
Do not park vehicles near cliffs, trees, or vulnerable slopes
Carry umbrellas, waterproof shoes, and stay in safe zones during alerts
Avoid riversides, rivulets, and forest trekking routes
Stay tuned to IMD and district emergency updates before stepping out
IMD Advisory for Farmers
Postpone pesticide/fertilizer spraying during the rainy spell
Ensure proper field drainage to prevent waterlogging of crops
Store grains or harvested produce in covered and elevated shelters
Stay alert for pest and fungal infestations due to rising humidity
Maintain regular contact with local agriculture officers for guidance
Forecast Snapshot (June 24–30):
June 24 & 25: Orange alert; heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, and Chamba
June 26–27: Thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall expected at many places
June 28–30: Light to moderate rain across the state with localised intense spells
Despite the disruption, monsoon in Himachal continues to offer its own brand of charm — misty woods, washed pine canopies, and the music of rainfall. But officials caution: this beauty comes with risk, and vigilance is essential.
