IGMC Needs Bone Marrow Transplant Centre: Experts at National Hematology Meet
Shimla, June 14:
Top medical experts from across North India have called for the urgent establishment of a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Centre at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, to strengthen cancer care and hematology services in Himachal Pradesh.
The demand was voiced during the inauguration of a two-day National Hematology Update at IGMC here, where specialists flagged the lack of advanced infrastructure for treating patients with complex blood disorders and malignancies.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Manish Gupta, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy, said, “It’s high time IGMC establishes a Bone Marrow Transplant facility.
Patients with hematological cancers still have to travel to bigger centers in Chandigarh or Delhi.
With dedicated professionals like Dr. Rajeev Sandal leading the way, the day is not far when we’ll have our own BMT unit here.”
Dr. Rajeev Sandal, the state’s only hematologist serving under Himachal Pradesh Health Services and Organising Secretary of the event, has been pivotal in spearheading hematology services at IGMC.
“This update brings together leading hematologists from across North India for talks, case discussions, and collaborative learning.
The focus is to enhance patient care and push for better treatment infrastructure, especially a BMT centre which is urgently needed,” he said.
IGMC Principal Dr. Sita Thakur and Medical Superintendent Dr. Rahul Rao also backed the call, stating that the medical college is committed to upgrading cancer and hematology care.
The update, which continues on June 15, will conclude with a press conference where experts will share a roadmap for improving hematology services, including training, diagnostics, and transplants in Himachal and beyond.
