SHIMLA: TAKING a cue from the fast-paced urban model of Bengaluru, Himachal Pradesh PWD and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh on Friday explored how southern India’s metro-city systems could be adapted for the hill state’s small towns and fragile urban centres.
During his visit to Bengaluru, Singh held meetings with Karnataka Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar to study Bengaluru’s urban planning, traffic management and smart governance systems for possible replication in Himachal Pradesh.
The discussions revolved around intelligent traffic systems, integrated command and control centres, smart mobility solutions and new civic finance models aimed at tackling rising congestion and urban chaos even in smaller towns.
Singh said Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, had emerged as a leading example of urban innovation and modern civic infrastructure.
He stressed that Himachal would closely study the “Bengaluru model” and suitably modify it to fit the geographical and ecological realities of hill towns like Shimla and other expanding urban pockets.
The move signals the Sukhu government’s growing push to modernise Himachal’s urban centres with technology-driven governance as traffic pressure, tourism load and unplanned expansion continue to mount in the state’s narrow hill towns.
