Srinagar/NewDelhi:

Parts of Kashmir witnessed protests on Sunday after reports and social media claims about dramatic developments in Iran triggered reactions among sections of the Shia community. Demonstrations were reported from several localities, prompting authorities to heighten vigilance amid an already sensitive security environment.

The protests come at a time when the Union Home Minister is on an official visit to Jammu and Kashmir, holding security and administrative review meetings. Law enforcement agencies have been placed on alert to prevent any spillover of tensions, officials said.

Reports circulating online linked the protests to claims surrounding Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, amid escalating hostilities involving the United States and Israel. However, India has not issued any official statement either on the reported developments in Iran or on the recent US-Israel military actions.

Notably, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, passed away in 1989, a fact that has added to confusion as unverified narratives continue to circulate.

Political Appeal for Calm

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation and urged restraint.

“I’m deeply concerned about the developments in Iran, including reports about the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader. I appeal to all communities to remain calm, uphold peace, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest,” Omar Abdullah said.

He also stressed that mourning communities must be allowed to grieve peacefully.

“The police and administration should exercise utmost restraint and refrain from using force or unnecessary restrictive measures,” he added.

The Chief Minister said the Jammu and Kashmir government is in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety and well-being of residents from the Union Territory, including students, currently in Iran.

Global Rhetoric, Local Sensitivities

Earlier, US President Donald Trump had described the Iranian leadership as “radical and wicked” in an address preceding US-Israel military operations, statements that have further fuelled passions across regions with religious and political sensitivities.

The situation has also drawn attention as Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a visit to Israel earlier this week, underscoring the geopolitical tightrope India is currently walking.

No Official Word from New Delhi

Despite the protests and international developments, New Delhi has so far remained silent, neither confirming reports related to Iran’s leadership nor commenting on the US-Israel strikes. Officials indicated that the Centre is closely monitoring the situation.

Security agencies in Kashmir and across Jammu and Kashmir have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance, prevent misinformation, and ensure that public order is not disturbed.

Authorities have appealed to citizens to rely only on verified information and refrain from spreading rumours that could inflame tensions in an already volatile atmosphere.
