New Delhi/Toronto: The Indian government is under fire for withholding data on deportations from Canada. An RTI query has revealed that 58 Emergency Certificates (ECs) were issued in 2024 for deporting Indian nationals. But the total number of deportations remains a mystery.

This information came through an RTI filed by Dr. Lakshya Mittal, National President of the United Doctors Front (UDF). The Indian Consulate in Toronto confirmed issuing 58 ECs at Canada’s request. But when asked about the total deportations, there was no official data.

This lack of transparency raises serious concerns. India and Canada are already facing diplomatic tensions.

The Khalistan issue, immigration crackdowns, and strained relations have kept the situation tense. Now, the missing deportation numbers add to the uncertainty.

Dr. Mittal has demanded clarity. "If 58 ECs were issued, how many were actually deported? The government must reveal the full data," he said.

With mounting questions, one thing is clear: India is keeping the full picture hidden. Is it to downplay the crisis? Or is there more to the story?
