Chennai– IIT Madras has announced the launch of a new B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, starting from the 2024-25 academic year.

This course, offered by the top-ranked institute in India, is designed to provide students with essential skills in the rapidly growing fields of AI and data analytics.

The program will admit 50 students through the JEE (Advanced) exam. It emphasizes core mathematical foundations, data science, AI/ML principles, application development, and ethical design.

The curriculum is crafted to give a broad view of AI applications across various industries, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges.

Set up through the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, funded by a ₹110 crore endowment from alumnus Sunil Wadhwani, the course aims to be a global leader in AI education.

The curriculum includes a mix of foundational sciences, advanced AI techniques, model training and deployment, and domain-specific applications, ensuring students are well-equipped for both research and industry roles.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the program's unique approach: "Our B.Tech in AI and Data Analytics connects multiple disciplines and prepares students to handle AI challenges with confidence. It’s the first of its kind globally, evolving from our faculty's extensive experience."

The program offers flexibility with electives spanning across departments, allowing students to pursue specific interests like speech technology, computer vision, and time-series analysis. Hands-on experience through labs, workshops, and projects is a key component, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Prof. B. Ravindran, Head of the Wadhwani School, emphasized, “AI is where computer science was 30 years ago, set to transform technology for generations. Our flagship B.Tech program equips students with fundamental and applied AI knowledge, making it distinctive.”

Prof. Arun K. Tangirala added, “Our curriculum covers everything from foundational sciences to industry applications, making students well-prepared for real-world AI challenges and opportunities.”
