New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the CBI-developed BHARATPOL portal at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi January 7.
The portal, described as a game-changer, promised to bring speed and efficiency to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) battling the surge of transnational crimes such as cyber frauds, financial scams, drug and human trafficking, and online radicalization.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Centre had been rolling out initiatives to strengthen the backbone of the country’s law enforcement. BHARATPOL was one such ambitious step, designed to empower Indian police officers with real-time access to international crime databases and assistance.
Why BHARATPOL Mattered
Before BHARATPOL, Indian LEAs coordinated with INTERPOL using outdated methods like emails, faxes, and letters, which slowed down investigations into borderless crimes. The CBI, as India’s National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, developed BHARATPOL to eliminate these inefficiencies.
The portal brought all stakeholders – from Central and State law enforcement officers to INTERPOL Liaison Officers (ILOs) – onto one digital platform. Tasks such as issuing Red Notices and other INTERPOL color-coded alerts became seamless, saving crucial time in tracking criminals and coordinating international actions.
A Transformative Tool for Police Officers
For field-level officers fighting crimes on the ground, BHARATPOL became more than just a portal – it was a lifeline. With instant access to international police support, officers acted faster on leads, making significant progress against organized crime syndicates and cyber criminals who had exploited the digital age.
CBI officials highlighted that the portal enhanced India’s global standing in combating transnational crimes.
“The growing complexity of crimes demanded tools that matched their scale. BHARATPOL bridged the gap between intent and action,” a senior official remarked.
Awards and Dignitaries
During the event, Amit Shah also presented Police Medals to 35 CBI officers for distinguished service and excellence in investigations.
The ceremony was attended by top officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Central Vigilance Commission, and other key departments.
Stepping Into the Future
As India faced a rising tide of cyber and financial crimes, BHARATPOL marked a significant step toward modernization and accountability.
It fast-tracked justice and tightened the noose around criminals exploiting international borders to evade the law.
