CBI Warns Citizens: Fake “WhatsApp-CBI” Gangs Are Looting People Across the Country

New Delhi:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sounded a loud warning to the public after a sudden spike in cases where fraudsters are pretending to be CBI officers on WhatsApp and phone calls.

The agency posted an alert on its official social handle, urging people to stay cautious and not fall into the trap of these “CBI impersonator” gangs.

According to the agency, these conmen are sending fake notices, forged summons, and even bogus arrest warrants—complete with copied CBI logos and fake officer signatures.

Their entire game is simple: scare people, threaten them with legal action, and then extort money.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters usually send a WhatsApp message or make a call claiming:

“You are under CBI investigation… your account is flagged… your Aadhaar is misused… send money or face arrest.”

To make the threat look real, they use: copied CBI seals and letterheads

forged signatures  fake ID cards,  profile pictures with the CBI emblem

Many people—shocked, scared and unaware of official procedures—end up paying money or sharing personal information.

CBI Says: ‘No Officer Will Call You Like This’

The agency clarified that CBI officers never demand money, never send summons on WhatsApp and never threaten people on calls.

If you get such a message, the CBI advises:

Do not reply. Do not send money. Do not share your documents,CBI warns.

Verify through official CBI numbers or visit the nearest police station.

A Scam That Thrives on Fear

These gangs know one thing: the moment someone hears “CBI case,” they panic.

Scammers cash in on this fear, targeting ordinary people—senior citizens, women, students, and anyone who is digitally unaware.

As a result, people have already lost huge amounts of money across different  the country.

CBI to Citizens: Stay Alert, Stay Safe

The agency has appealed to the public to come forward and report any such fake messages. Police and cybercrime units have been asked to tighten their watch as well.
