SHIMLA — Bumper-to-bumper pandemonium gripped the Queen of Hills as a relentless stream of Delhi-NCR and Punjab registration plates stormed the Parwanoo border.

But the Cafe owners and hoteliers  were experienced windfalls as weekenders lineup up seeking rooms paying the ask.

With over 7,000 outsider cars barreling up the gradients in 36 hours, National Highway-5 morphed into a sluggish, horn-blaring crawl.

Bottlenecks brought traffic to a near standstill around Dharampur, Solan, and the dreaded Victory Tunnel junction, while multi-level parking plazas in town flashed “FULL” boards before noon.

Live From the Blacktop: Ground Zero on Social Feeds

As Monday daytime rolls in on October 5, feeds across X and Instagram are lighting up with motorists venting straight from the trenches:

"Five hours to cover 22 kilometers from Dharampur to Solan. The clutch is smoking, the temperature gauge is climbing, and my toddler has had three meltdowns. If you're planning to drive up today—don't."

@RohanS_Delhi, posting from an idling SUV near Kumarhatti.

"Came looking for peace, got a Delhi bypass jam at 6,000 feet. Locals are walking faster on the ridge path than our bumper-to-bumper convoy on Cart Road."

@PoojaTravels_, sharing a 360-degree panorama of stationary brake lights heading toward the lift.

Ditch the Snail Race: Smart Mountain Detours

Instead of cooking your engine in endless exhaust plumes, sidestep the main drag:

Swerve via Chail & Sadhupul: Peel off NH-5 at Kandaghat and take the winding pine corridor through Sadhupul and Chail.

It adds kilometers, but completely skips the Solan–Victory Tunnel bottleneck and brings you straight toward Mashobra or Chhota Shimla.

Track the Nalagarh–Bilaspur Loop: Motorists bound for upper Shimla, Narkanda, or Kinnaur can bypass the Kalka–Dharampur choke point entirely by skirting through Nalagarh to rejoin the higher ridge routes.

Pitstop & Chill: Food Stalls Over Fume Stalls

If the ascent is locked down, stop idling and turn the wait into a feast:

Highway Dhaba Therapy: Pull off at Dharampur or Barog for smoking-hot tandoori paranthas, spiced bun-samosa, and piping kadak chai while the midday wave clears.

Boutique Cafe Sanctuaries: Duck into the deck cafes and garden diners around Jabli and Kiarighat. You get guaranteed parking bays, crisp pine air, and working Wi-Fi instead of road rage.

Stagger the Final Push: Let the afternoon return-traffic flurry subside. Hitting the final climb up Cart Road around dusk means cooler radiators, empty lanes, and twinkling valley lights.
