LEH: On the night of June 28, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Eastern Ladakh when an army tank got stuck in the Shyok River near Saser Brangsa during a military training activity. Due to a sudden rise in the water level, the tank became trapped.
Despite quick response from rescue teams, the high current and increasing water levels thwarted their efforts. Unfortunately, the tank crew, consisting of five personnel, lost their lives.
What has shocked the surprising is that how the river level rose so abruptly considering that the night temperatures are almost near to freezing river and the melting of glaciers is zero, commented locals.
River originates from Rimo Glacier, flows in southeast direction, joined the Pangong range where it takes a northwest turn and flowing parallel to previous path.
Unless there is rains in the river catchment, river can not rise so suddenly.
The Indian Army deeply regrets the loss of these brave soldiers. Rescue operations are ongoing.
