Beas River in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

Researchers from various institutions examined water and sediment samples over a 300-kilometer stretch of the river, uncovering a concerning threat to the ecosystem.

Published in the journal "Environment Pollution," the study found widespread microplastic contamination in the Beas River.

Water samples contained between 46 to 222 microplastic particles per liter, while sediment samples showed even higher concentrations, ranging from 36 to a staggering 896 particles per kilogram.

The highest concentrations were observed in densely populated and urbanized areas, such as Kullu, highlighting a direct link between human activities and pollution levels.

The most common types of microplastics identified were fibers smaller than one millimeter, primarily composed of polyethylene—a widely used plastic in various products.

This indicates that sources like textile waste and plastic packaging significantly contribute to the pollution.

The research team included experts from California State University Stanislaus, USA; Pondicherry University, India; and the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi.

Beyond measuring microplastic quantities, the study assessed their potential environmental risks.

While the overall pollution load index was relatively low, the polymer hazard index and potential ecological risk index reached high levels in certain areas, suggesting significant threats to aquatic life and potentially human health.

Many communities rely on the Beas River for drinking water, underscoring the urgency of addressing this pollution.
