SHIMLA: The ongoing construction of the Shimla-Kalka Forelane National Highway, specifically the Dhalli-Kathlighat section, has raised serious concerns among local villagers.
They allege illegal and unscientific dumping of construction debris, causing significant disruptions and environmental hazards.
Heavy rains over the past two days have resulted in three major retaining wall collapses.
Residents worry that this poor debris management, particularly on steep slopes in areas like Dhalli, poses a severe risk of flash floods as the monsoon approaches.
"The debris is being dumped recklessly into our fields and near our homes," said a local villager.
"This not only endangers our properties but could also lead to a major disaster during the rainy season."
Despite repeated protests and complaints to the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, villagers feel their concerns have been ignored. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has yet to address the issue satisfactorily.
Anirudh Singh, the Panchayati Raj Minister and MLA from Kasumpti, emphasized the gravity of the situation: "Immediate action is necessary.
ÑNHAI must implement remedial measures to prevent any potential catastrophe, especially with the monsoon rains on the horizon."
As tensions rise, villagers demand urgent intervention to rectify the irregularities and safeguard their houses snd fields.
