SHIMLA: Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan today laid the foundation stone for two new parking lots in Kagnadhar (Ward 30), a project designed to accommodate about  30 vehicles and ease local traffic congestion.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, Local Councillor Ram Rattan Verma, Shimla Municipal Commissioner and HIMUDA Chief Executive Officer alongside several other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Chauhan emphasized that the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is committed to resolving the city's pressing parking shortages and expanding recreational infrastructure for children.

He announced that the civic body is set to clear a Rs 3-crore project to establish gymnasiums, parks, and playgrounds across all wards by utilizing available local spaces. The Duct project is nearing completion that has put a  jungle of wires and cables and pipeline underground beautifying the The Mall.

Highlighting the urgent need for sports and fitness facilities, the Mayor noted that engaging youth in athletics is crucial to combating the rising tide of drug addiction across Shimla and Himachal Pradesh.

He commended Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s initiatives against substance abuse, particularly the anti-chitta (synthetic drug) drive spearheaded by the Himachal Pradesh Police and its Special Task Force. Chauhan urged senior citizens in every ward to form local committees to guide and support this campaign to its logical conclusion.

Reiterating that the SMC is working above political affiliations to meet residents' demands, the Mayor stated that ward-wise traffic and parking solutions are being actively pursued wherever land is available.

He also noted that the new lift project to the Ridge is nearing completion and will soon be dedicated to the public. Additionally, the Mayor praised Councillor Ram Rattan Verma for his proactive efforts in developing Kangnadhar and vigorously raising ward issues in the Municipal House.

Speaking on the occasion, Kangnadhar Councillor Ram Rattan Verma stated that development work in the ward is progressing in full swing. Acknowledging minor differences among certain Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), he assured residents of his commitment to resolving all local grievances collaboratively.

Verma noted that the two upcoming parking facilities will soon be ready, providing much-needed relief to the HIMUDA colony and the broader Kangnadhar area.

Pointing out that the SMC lacks its own land bank in the area, Verma urged the HIMUDA CEO to allocate available acquired land for public amenities and sought active cooperation for future developmental projects.

He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, and the SMC for their continued support in developing the ward.

The event proceedings were conducted by V.P. Kalta, a local resident, who is President, Rotary International, North India Chapter.

Several councillors and prominent citizens attended the ceremony, where senior citizens and dignitaries were also honored.

Sitting & Former Councillors: Sheenam Kataria (Benmore), Asha Sharma (Pateog), Nisha Thakur  (New Shimla), Narinder Thakur Bhattakufer and former councillors Charanjit Singh, who is also President  Congress Shimla Urban and Deepak Rohal.
